iPad and other applications
The launch of the iPad just before the summer of 2010 has opened teh tabletPC market. Not only is the iPad suitable for reading traditional eBooks (ePub and PDF), in it's wake a number of "Apps" (applications) followed. These apps make full use of the touchscreen and motion detectors that so typically define the iPad.
For a publisher, who initially might see the iPad mainly as a threat, these devices open up a wide range of new opportunities. Of course there is no ground to design a specific app for every book in the market but for some publications content can suddenly be disclosed in new, more interactive and intuitive, even visually more appealing ways.
iPad apps features:
- Complete graphic freedom
- No limits to functionality
- Typical tablet features like motion detecting, geolocation and others are available
- Integration of video, audio and images
- Embedding extra content or linking to and integration of external (online) content
Types of apps
Aside of the iPad several other devices have arisen on the market. Most of these use the Android operating system or Windows Mobile.
Because of the diversity in devices and applications we distinguish different types of apps.
- Web applications: existing web applications can be optimised for tablet use, if your audiance consumes your content on a wide range of platforms and you have large sets of data (databases) to disclose web applications can be your "weapon of choice".
- Flash/HTML: Flash (until further notice not natively supported on iPad) and HTML offer a lot of possibilities in a more or less platform independant environment.
- Proprietary apps: apps developed for a specific device or operating system, think all apps in the iTunes AppStore. These apps offer full access to all features and functions of that specific device but their usability is limited to that device.
